Response to Intervention |
When the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) was reauthorized in 2004, along with it came a new term and concept in educational reform, Response to Intervention (RtI). RtI provides a new approach for identifying students with learning deficiencies rather than the traditional “waiting to fail” model. This process guides the interventions that begin as soon as any student begins to fall behind in the classroom. While there is near universal agreement among educators that the concept of RtI is the right approach, the reality of implementing an effective RtI program can be daunting. In addition to accountability for ensuring that all children learn state curriculum and are proficient at grade level expectations, there is a need to individualize instruction based on varying needs and to provide differentiated instruction to reach all students. Instructional technology has the potential to help teachers do all this and more. With the right technology, all students can be engaged in relevant instruction, working independently on the skills they need, receiving constant feedback and progressing at their own pace. Curriculum Advantage, Inc. listened to you as you looked for ways to implement RtI effectively, using technology and tools already at your disposal. Through a research project conducted by Dr. Cynthia Milliken, an expert in the field of special education for over 30 years, and by partnering with educators already using innovative ideas to deliver the right instruction to every child, we have developed an instructional model for using Classworks to support your RtI program at every tier of intervention. The Classworks RtI Model includes specific information on the “key elements” of RtI for students at each tier and then provides recommendations for using Classworks effectively for screening, instruction and progress monitoring. By using Classworks, teachers are able to target and individualize instruction while meeting the needs of the entire classroom; and the accountability tools provide the data needed to adapt instruction and ensure program effectiveness.
