LAWRENCEVILLE, GA - Jun 06, 2010 - Classworks® Whole School Reform and Professional Development models offer the tools needed to increase student achievement and build teacher capacity
The Tennessee Department of Education, one of only two states to win the federal Race to the Top competition in round one, has named Curriculum Advantage, Inc. an approved provider for both whole school reform and professional development. Schools making sweeping changes to increase student achievement may now turn to Curriculum Advantage for the support they need to be successful.
Demonstrating efficacy was central to meeting that qualification, including the ability to effect positive change in the performance of students and teachers, while giving schools sustainable methodologies that reach beyond federal dollars.
One such example of efficacy is at Tullahoma City Schools in Tullahoma, Tennessee. With the leadership of Dr. Dan Lawson, superintendent of Tullahoma City Schools and the 2002 Tennessee Superintendent of the Year, his district was able to increase academic performance at all levels using the Classworks model. “We wanted a comprehensive solution that addressed our district’s needs — formative assessment, individualized instruction, professional learning and data management. Curriculum Advantage was able to help us integrate technology across our district – from engaging student software to professional development that helps our teachers effectively manage differentiated instruction. The Classworks team met and exceeded our expectations,” said Lawson. “This program positively impacted student performance, including our more difficult to reach, lower-level kids. The professional learning increased teacher effectiveness. I’m not sure who liked it more – the students or the teachers!”
The Classworks® whole school reform model maximizes technology to combine standards-based curriculum and assessment to provide exactly what each student needs. The software makes it easy to individualize student instruction and tailor assignments to each child’s learning style and cognitive level. Integrated assessments allow teachers to more easily monitor progress. In addition, the professional learning component establishes Classworks Learning Communities as the support structure for each teacher to develop their instructional capabilities and learn strategies to better accelerate students’ learning. Leadership training further transforms the school into a collaborative environment where each member of the team plays a valuable role in the success of the school.
“We look forward to having a positive impact on student achievement in Tennessee,” said Melissa Sinunu, chief operations officer for Curriculum Advantage.
